Painting to Help Others — A PBS Feature
I’m honored to be featured in a recent Kalamazoo Lively Arts segment on PBS called “Painting to Help Others.” The video offers a look into my painting process and what inspires my work — from early experiments with watercolor and acrylic to the layered, mixed-media pieces I create today.
Filmed in my home studio, the segment shares how I began painting later in life, teaching myself through curiosity and persistence. It also touches on the themes that guide my work — compassion, connection, and the belief that art can make a difference in people’s lives.
The video includes conversations with host Sharmane Flanders and footage of my process — mixing glazes, building texture, and exploring color as a way to express emotion and story. I also talk about my family, the artists who’ve influenced me, and the joy I find in creating pieces that bring comfort or inspiration to others.
